Nextcloud/ownCloud Mail v0.6 released – with alias support

2 min read

hacking_inside

We worked hard during the Nextcloud Conference to get version 0.6 of the Mail app ready! 😎

It is now possible to add aliases to your email accounts! This feature was implemented by our GSOC student Tahaa Karim. He also worked on Signature support which is far but not yet merged. If someone wants this feature any help is appreciated.

The most recent version of the Mail app only works on ownCloud 9.1 and Nextcloud 10. Older installations need to use version 0.5.3. As most of the Mail developers have moved to Nextcloud, extensive testing only happens there. We also moved our git repository to the Nextcloud organisation, and the app version 0.6.0 was built from the code there.

It has already been uploaded to the ownCloud app store and can also be downloaded from Github.

Here is the 0.6 changelog:

Added

  • Alias support @tahaalibra
  • New incoming messages are prefetched @ChristophWurst
  • Custom app folder support @juliushaertl
  • Improved search @ChristophWurst
  • Scroll to refresh @ChristophWurst
  • Shortcuts to star and mark messages as unread @ChristophWurst
  • Shortcuts to select previous/next messsage @ChristophWurst

Changed

  • Minimum server is Nextcloud 10/ownCloud 9.1 #84 @ChristophWurst
  • Use session storage instead of local storage for client-side cache @ChristophWurst
  • When deleting the current message, the next one is selected immediatelly @ChristophWurst

Fixed

  • Client error while composing a new message @ChristophWurst
  • Delay app start until page has finished loading @ChristophWurst
  • Auto-redirection of HTML mail links @ChristophWurst
  • Update folder counters when reading/deleting messages

Special thanks goes out to your testing member plastikschnitzer!✌️ If you wanna help test new Mail releases, just drop us a message or leave a comment.

export OC_PASS=test12
for ((i=101;ido
./occ user:add gomez_$i --password-from-env
done

Thanks @nickvergessen for the occ tip :)

ownCloud, Nextcloud and Portknox.net the hosting provider

As many of you have already noticed, Frank Karlitschek has started a fork of ownCloud called Nextcloud and started bootstraping a new firm around it - the Nextcloud GmbH.

Many customers have asked us what this means for Portknox.net - the hosting provider and partner. Actually, we have not decided yet whether to stay with ownCloud or switch to Nextcloud and we will take the time it needs to make the right decision.

Nextcloud is planned as a drop-in replacement, this means it is possible to migrate to it from ownCloud later on. Right now we will not change anything, instead we finish the migration of all customers to ownCloud 9, which is the perfect base for a switch to Nextcloud. But we will decide at some point as it does not make sense to support or ship two different cloud systems. We stay specialized, focused and up-to-date, to provide the best solution for our customers.

I am sure we will make the right decision, as I know most of the developers from ownCloud and Nextcloud personally. Furthermore we are deeply involved and follow the progress of both projects.

Let's see what happens and hope competition is a good thing!

ownCloud Mail v0.3 released

1 min read

We’re proud to announce the arrival of the next version of ownCloud Mail. It has already been uploaded to the ownCloud app store and can also be downloaded from Github.

We have merged more than 170 pull requests since version 0.2.1 - mostly JavaScript Refactoring and bugfixes.

Although the 0.3 release was planned as refactoring only, we have included some new features:

  • Image blocking
  • Inline images are directly shown
  • Speed up unified inbox
  • Better overall frontend performance

This release already supports ownCloud 9.0 which will be released next month. If you want to know what’s coming up in version 0.4 & 0.5 you'll find more information in this blog post on owncloud.org.

The ownCloud conf and Mail app - a report

2 min read

Mail App table on the conf

During the ownCloud Conf which took place last week in Berlin we released version 0.2 of the ownCloud Mail to apps.owncloud.com.

The new features are:

  • Unified inbox
  • Client-side caching for better performance
  • Ability to forward emails
  • Inline reply
  • Attachments on replies
  • Mobile support

The next weeks we will work on version 0.3 which will be about refactoring, cleanup, focusing on fixing bugs and getting the release more stable.

During the ownCloud conf we made HUGE improvements:

  • We cleaned up all JS files and harmonized the Code Style with JSCS
  • We introduced RequireJS and Bower
  • Most of the code has been refactored to a Backbone Marionette App
  • Images blocked by default, can be loaded on request
  • We moved to Revealing JS Modules
  • We added Jasmin tests with the Karma runner. Basic tests for views and modules are already there
  • We moved our PHP templates to JS handlebar templates (including translations)
  • All tests and style / syntax checks are executed by Travis

Whoever wants to join the Mail app team is welcome, and the best is: you don’t have to be a developer. We need people for translating, testing etc. Don’t hesitate to contact us on IRC or jump in and clone the repository.

Do you have something to hide?
