Bulk create testusers for ownCloud / Nextcloud

Maybe someone need it, too. A small shell script to create hundreds of users:

#!/bin/bash
set -e
export OC_PASS=test12
for ((i=101;i<=500;i++));
do
./occ user:add gomez_$i –password-from-env
done

Thanks @nickvergessen for the occ tip :)

ownCloud, Nextcloud and Portknox.net the hosting provider

nextcloudlogo_white_big-300x129As many of you have already noticed, Frank Karlitschek has started a fork of ownCloud called Nextcloud and started bootstraping a new firm around it – the Nextcloud GmbH.

Many customers have asked us what this means for Portknox.net – the hosting provider and partner. Actually, we have not decided yet whether to stay with ownCloud or switch to Nextcloud and we will take the time it needs to make the right decision.

Nextcloud is planned as a drop-in replacement, this means it is possible to migrate to it from ownCloud later on. Right now we will not change anything, instead we finish the migration of all customers to ownCloud 9, which is the perfect base for a switch to Nextcloud. But we will decide at some point as it does not make sense to support or ship two different cloud systems. We stay specialized, focused and up-to-date, to provide the best solution for our customers.

I am sure we will make the right decision, as I know most of the developers from ownCloud and Nextcloud personally. Furthermore we are deeply involved and follow the progress of both projects.

Let’s see what happens and hope competition is a good thing!

ownCloud Mail v0.3 released

We’re proud to announce the arrival of the next version of ownCloud Mail. It has already been uploaded to the ownCloud app store and can also be downloaded from Github.mail

We have merged more than 170 pull requests since version 0.2.1 – mostly JavaScript Refactoring and bugfixes.

Although the 0.3 release was planned as refactoring only, we have included some new features:

  • Image blocking
  • Inline images are directly shown
  • Speed up unified inbox
  • Better overall frontend performance

This release already supports ownCloud 9.0 which will be released next month. If you want to know what’s coming up in version 0.4 & 0.5 you’ll find more information in this blog post on owncloud.org.

The ownCloud conf and Mail app – a report

Mail App table on the conf

During the ownCloud Conf which took place last week in Berlin we released version 0.2 of the ownCloud Mail to apps.owncloud.com.

The new features are:

  • Unified inbox
  • Client-side caching for better performance
  • Ability to forward emails
  • Inline reply
  • Attachments on replies
  • Mobile support

The next weeks we will work on version 0.3 which will be about refactoring, cleanup, focusing on fixing bugs and getting the release more stable.

During the ownCloud conf we made HUGE improvements:

  • We cleaned up all JS files and harmonized the Code Style with JSCS
  • We introduced RequireJS and Bower
  • Most of the code has been refactored to a Backbone Marionette App
  • Images blocked by default, can be loaded on request
  • We moved to Revealing JS Modules
  • We added Jasmin tests with the Karma runner. Basic tests for views and modules are already there
  • We moved our PHP templates to JS handlebar templates (including translations)
  • All tests and style / syntax checks are executed by Travis

Whoever wants to join the Mail app team is welcome, and the best is: you don’t have to be a developer. We need people for translating, testing etc. Don’t hesitate to contact us on IRC or jump in and clone the repository.

How to manage todo.txt with ownCloud

Because it’s so flawless and easy to setup I want to share my Todo.txt & ownCloud setup I use every day.

Todo.txt is task tracking in a simple txt file you control. A set of simple rules help you get organized and there are several apps for all kind of devices.

Because no one should know what I want to do next or what I have done, it’s important for me to host myself. The official Todo.txt apps for iOS and Android are no option, they only work with dropbox.

So here is how I host my own Todo.txt in ownCloud and how I keep it in sync with all of my devices:

On my workstation and laptop (which run with Linux), I use the Todo.txt Command Line tool, for me it’s the fastest and most effective way. The ownCloud Sync-Clients do the hard work and keep the files up-to-date:

sync_todo

This just works, never had a conflict or outdated files. Configured one time and ready to work.

On my Android Phone I use FolderSync Lite together with Simpletask Cloudless. I choose FolderSync over the ownCloud Android Clients because it does not use that much battery (maybe it’s better now). I use scheduling of 2 h which works good for me, on my phone I don’t need instant sync.

Simpletask Cloudless accesses just the todo.txt on your phone (synced by FolderSync):

simpletask

Because todo.txt is just a plain text file, it can also be easily managed within ownCloud web interface and the texteditor app.

Der Zündfunk Generator ist für mich ein Pflicht Podcast, zur Zeit bin ich am aufholen verpasster Sendungen und kann die im Februar gesendete Generator Ausgabe wärmstens empfehlen:

Big Brother is watching you: Die digitale Privatsphäre ist tot, so viel ist seit Edward Snowden klar. Die große Frage ist nun: Können wir das Internet reparieren? Welche technischen und politischen Maßnahmen sind dazu nötig?
